So what is WRL-UK? We are the Wing Racing League UK, an idea formed in the dark, deep (and often wet) valleys of South Wales. With the idea planted in our minds from other countries who all have their respective wing racing leagues, events and followings, we decided it was finally time to put the talking into action.
With planning in full swing, the first trial event was held at Popham Airfield in October 2021 alongside the first UK X-Class race. It was a great success and provided lots of ideas, things to do and change and the basis to build upon. Following the success, we tried to pull together as many events as we could. From Wings n Wheels and Valley Flyers to Eglwysilan model flying club we managed to host several successful events, even despite the weather!
As things progressed, several public discussions were held and the decision was made that we should form as a BMFA affiliated club. We can now proudly say that we are officially affiliated to the British Model Flying Association which provides many benefits to us and the pilots entering races and events we hold.
What do we race?
As the name suggests, we race fixed wings. Specifically ‘Spec’ wings, which follow the specification agreed by our friends over the pond in the USA. Typically this mandates a fixed wing, of foam construction and a maximum of 4s with a 2200kv motor. More information can be found here.
